The Adult Echocardiography Program at Baylor Scott & White Health’s Cardiovascular Institute is a 52-week, certificate-level program designed to equip students with the skills needed to perform echocardiographic exams. Focused on training entry-level cardiac sonographers, this program blends classroom instruction, hands-on labs, and clinical externships across Baylor Scott & White facilities.


Curriculum Structure

The 52-week program is divided into three semesters, each building on the last. Students start with foundational courses in cardiovascular anatomy and ultrasound physics, progressing through advanced cardiac imaging and internship hours. Each semester includes a mix of didactic sessions, lab practice, and clinical externships, culminating in over 1,500 contact hours.


Prerequisites

To apply, students must meet the following prerequisites:

  • 18 years or older
  • Associate degree (Bachelor’s degree preferred)
  • Anatomy and Physiology I and II with labs (within the last six years)
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
  • Required immunizations, including MMR, Varicella, and TB test

Application Process

Applications open in February each year for the following cohort. Prospective students must submit:

  • A completed application and $100 fee
  • Official transcripts
  • Resume and two reference letters
  • A personal essay outlining career goals and relevant experiences

Cost and Resources

The program costs $22,000, covering administrative fees, required textbooks, four sets of scrubs, a laptop for program use, and student memberships in relevant professional organizations. Baylor Scott & White also reimburses the exam fee for national credentialing upon graduation.
