College of Health Care Professions (CHCP) Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program

Program Highlights

The College of Health Care Professions (CHCP) offers an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Diagnostic Medical Sonography, preparing students for entry-level roles as ultrasound technicians. Through hybrid learning, this 96-week program combines online coursework with hands-on training in clinical settings.

Program Structure

The 22-month Diagnostic Medical Sonography program includes both theoretical and clinical training. Students learn the essentials of sonography, including using ultrasound equipment to perform diagnostic imaging of the abdomen, pelvis, and other internal structures. With online classes in subjects like anatomy, physics, and medical ethics, students can complete much of the coursework remotely while fulfilling hands-on requirements through in-person labs and clinical placements.

Prerequisites

Applicants must meet specific requirements to join the CHCP sonography program:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Proficiency in English reading and writing
  • Scholastic Level Exam score of 21 or higher
  • Criminal background check (DOE form submission if needed)

Core Coursework

The curriculum includes essential courses like College Mathematics, General Physics, and Anatomy for Sonographers, which lay a foundation for more specialized sonography training. Subsequent semesters cover topics in ultrasound physics, patient safety, and abdominal and vascular sonography. Advanced classes in gynecological and obstetric sonography provide students with the expertise to perform diverse ultrasound procedures.

Clinical Practicum

Practical experience is a significant component of the CHCP program, with clinical practicums spread over three semesters. These rotations in hospitals and clinics provide real-world exposure, helping students develop skills and confidence in using ultrasound technology on patients. The program’s practicum hours reinforce the hands-on training gained in laboratory settings, ensuring students are workplace-ready upon graduation.

Certification and Career Preparation

Graduates are prepared to take registry exams through the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) and the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT). The program emphasizes professional development and patient-centered care, enabling students to pursue sonography careers in hospitals, clinics, and specialized imaging centers.
